Let’s take a guess… You’ve spent the past few weeks trying to figure out where to spend your summer holiday. The group chat is full of conflicting recommendations, you’ve got more tabs open than you’d care to admit, and your social media algorithm seems intent on only fuelling your chronic indecisiveness. Apologies in advance, but we’re about to make things even worse. Because if Stockholm isn’t already on your Euro summer holiday shortlist, by the time you reach the end of this article, there’s a very good chance it will be.
For years, the most fashionable travel circles in Europe have chosen the Swedish capital for their summer breaks. Here’s why you should too.
The days seem to go on forever
“A never-ending midnight sun!”
While Zara Larsson may have been singing about a general sense of freedom, adventure, and making the most of good days in this absolute summer banger, we can’t help but suspect that her hometown, Stockholm, played at least a small part in inspiring its vibe.
Strictly speaking, the Swedish capital doesn’t experience the midnight sun (the natural phenomenon where the sun remains visible at the local midnight). For that, you’ll have to head further north into Swedish Lapland. But during the height of summer, it comes surprisingly close. Around Midsummer, daylight stretches for up to 18 hours, and even after sunset, the skies don’t get fully dark.
It’s magical to witness. People linger outdoors for longer. Plans run later. Nobody seems in a particular rush to head home. Restaurants spill out onto terraces, parks stay busy well into the evening, and the city’s waterfronts become gathering places for anyone hoping to squeeze a little more out of the day. After months of darkness and cold, Stockholm embraces summer with an enthusiasm that’s difficult not to get swept up in.
Nature is never far away
One of Stockholm’s greatest strengths is that you don’t have to choose between nature and city life – good news for those visiting with friends or family who have diverse interests.
Just minutes from the city centre, the vast green island of Djurgården feels like an escape from urban life whilst still being firmly part of it. You can spend the morning wandering tree-lined paths and waterfront trails before stepping inside the Vasa Museum to marvel at a remarkably preserved 17th-century warship, or reliving Sweden’s pop glory days at ABBA The Museum. For those seeking something a little more adrenaline-fuelled, Gröna Lund amusement park brings rollercoasters, live concerts, and summer energy to the island’s shoreline.
If you fancy going further afield, the Stockholm Archipelago is calling. Stretching across roughly 30,000 islands, islets, and skerries – many easily accessible by ferry – the archipelago is one of the Open City’s biggest and best summer attractions.
A day trip to colourful Vaxholm offers waterfront cafés and postcard-worthy harbour views, whilst islands such as Grinda provide hiking trails, swimming spots, and a slower pace of life. The further you travel, the more it feels like you’ve stumbled into an entirely different world. After a day exploring, Hotel J feels particularly fitting. Overlooking the water in Nacka Strand, its sailing-inspired interiors and harbourfront setting feel perfectly in tune with the maritime character of Stockholm summer.
Life revolves around the water
Don’t get us wrong, we love a beach as much as the next person. But there’s something uniquely refreshing about being able to take a dip in the middle of a city.
Perhaps it’s the spontaneity and communal spirit of it all. There’s no need to dedicate an entire day to the activity, pack a bag full of supplies, or spend half your holiday brushing sand out of places sand was never meant to reach. During summer in Stockholm, swimming is simply part of everyday life. It’s something you do after work, between plans, or on the way home from meeting friends. You could quite feasibly stop for a swim after picking up groceries, and nobody would think twice about it.
Built across 14 islands and surrounded by remarkably clean waterways, Stockholm has a relationship with water that few capital cities can rival. At places like Långholmen, Smedsuddsbadet, and Tantolunden, you’ll find people diving into the water, reading books by the shoreline, and treating the city itself as one giant public pool.
Summer socialising done right
Of course, long days, good weather, and nature are only half the story. Every great summer destination needs places to mingle and crack open a cold one, and Stockholm has no shortage of them.
For LGBTQ+ travellers, few venues are more synonymous with summer than Mälarpaviljongen. Floating on the waters of Lake Mälaren, the beloved waterfront venue has spent more than two decades serving drinks, food, sunshine, and pure camp fabulousness to a wonderfully mixed crowd. If you’re looking for somewhere to settle in with friends and watch the day drift by, start here.
Across Södermalm, Lyckan i Tanto has quickly established itself as another summer favourite. Founded by the team behind Sweden’s largest lesbian club night, Moxy, the venue hosts everything from live music and daytime parties to sing-alongs and community gatherings. But more than any individual event, it’s the atmosphere that keeps people coming back. Warm, inclusive, and effortlessly relaxed, Lyckan is exactly the type of fabulous third space we queer folk crave.
