Heavenly hedonism: divine experiences every visitor to Stockholm should have

Gay couple shopping in Bibliotekstan. Hedonism in Stockholm, Sweden

Planning a trip to Stockholm? Lucky you: the Swedish capital and Scandinavia’s largest city is a treasure trove of fabulous, LGBT-friendly attractions and a huge number of queer tourists visit each year to make unforgettable memories and treat themselves to the very best that’s on offer across the Open City. If you didn’t already know, Stockholm and hedonism go hand in hand!

Sure, many of the best things to do locally remain totally free; from a walk on leafy Djurgården island, to a stroll around the Gamla Stan, our picture-perfect old town. But for those looking to make themselves – and their travel companions – feel extra special, here are a few ideas…

Treat yourself to a meal at Sturehof

Having started as a German-style beer hall all the way back in 1897, this award-winning restaurant in Stockholm’s fancy Östermalm district has a reputation that precedes it. Known as one the best eateries around town, Sturehof attracts a vibrant mix of local and international visitors, all drooling over its extensive menu!

Speaking of which, you’ve got to try their home-made crispbread (‘knäckerbröd’) for starters, and don’t forget to schedule in some time to skim Sturehof’s jaw-dropping wine menu. There are some 600+ varieties of ‘vin’ available here, and trained sommeliers will be happy to advise you on what goes with your meal. Our personal favourite? The baked aubergine with carrot and tahini cream – it’s simply divine.

Deck yourself out in the latest fashions in Bibliotekstan

Into fashion? Of course you are. Stockholm’s most upscale shopping district by far, Bibliotekstan might be manageable in size, but it really packs a punch: many of the world’s most high-end fashion brands sit shoulder-to-shoulder here, from the big houses of Milan and Paris to London to New York! Then, there are Sweden’s very own avant-garde brands.

But beyond that, the cluster of streets also boasts stylish cafes and restaurants, as well as antique stores, a florist and even an auction house for those looking to make a budget-bursting purchase! This is what Stockholm hedonism is all about.

Bed down in the Mini Suite at Hotel Hasselbacken

The LGBT-welcoming, four-star Hasselbacken has recently been renovated and it’s been very much the talk of the town ever since the first new images were released. Thanks to its extensive makeover, the Djurgården-based bolthole now ranks among the most contemporary addresses to bed down at during a trip to the capital, and things don’t get much better than its Mini Suite!

Featuring a calm and refined colour palette, rounded surfaces throughout and a gorgeously designed bathroom equipped with organic toiletries by LA Bruket, the suite is a real treat to stay in, and a wonderful way to live the sweet life for a few nights…

Check out a performance at Hotel Rival

All-around fabulous Hotel Rival is a destination in its own right, and their jam-packed calendar of cultural performances certainly contributes to that. In its designated theatre space, this Södermalm address welcomes national and international talent to wow the audience – and that, they do!

There are so many different types of shows here, it’s hard to keep up: from concerts to stand-up comedy and theatrical plays, nights at the Rival enjoy an unparalleled reputation around town, and it’s advisable to book tickets early. If you feel like sticking around after a performance (and why wouldn’t you?), there’s always the historic, Art Deco-inspired cocktail bar. This is Stockholm hedonism at its very best!
