Spotlight on: Villa Dagmar

A bedroom at Villa Dagmar, Stockholm, Sweden

Villa Dagmar might not yet have the history of its sister property, the iconic Hotel Diplomat, but this recently opened hotel in the Östermalm neighbourhood of Stockholm has all it takes to make an imprint on the capital’s hospitality scene and enter the elite circle of legendary addresses in town.

Named after Dagmar Bergsten, a former member of the Malmström family, who own the property alongside the Diplomat, this five-star boutique hideaway pays homage to Bergsten’s curious nature, which sent her on travels across Europe in the early 19th century. Staying here, you’ll find plenty of references to her international lifestyle!

What’s the atmosphere like at Villa Dagmar?

In one word: elevated. Although that’s not to say the hotel is simply luxurious. Instead, Villa Dagmar takes an elevated approach to all it does; from staging ever-changing art exhibitions that give the Östermalm bolthole its cultured flavour, to the chic yet understated design that pervades the hotel’s public areas.

There’s a decidedly international feel here, and you get the sense that the world is at home in this beautiful property, which invites visitors into the building, encouraging them to check out Villa Dagmar’s concept stores and pop-up experiences. That said, there’s more of a gentle buzz here than a carnival – guests always come first, and they view the hotel as a retreat to relax in after a day of exploring town.

What are the rooms like?

A total of 70 suites and guest rooms make up Villa Dagmar’s hospitality offering. They all adhere to a specific style aesthetic that’s both timeless and contemporary (and of course, utterly Instagrammable!). Still, each room has been individually designed so that returning guests can look forward to a new experience during each stay.

You’ll notice both Swedish as well as Italian design influences in the interiors, a combination that works surprisingly well, bringing together the clarity of Scandinavian aesthetics with the warmth and joie-de-vivre of bella Italia. What’s more, all rooms and suites have views of either Stockholm city or one of the hotel’s courtyards!

Other than the rooms, why stay here?

For one, there are several places within the hotel where guests can go on a culinary journey. The Restaurant is perhaps the most obvious, but the Garden Bar also deserves a mention, and so does the gourmet heaven of Dagges, with its Mediterranean-inspired menu where each plate comes with a matching, recommended glass of fine wine…

Looking to detox after all that sinning? Next to a state-of-the-art gym and Dagmar Spirit & Retreat, where spa and beauty treatments are made bespoke to your needs, Villa Dagmar also hosts weekly gong healing and sound bath ceremonies to facilitate utter relaxation and help guests set intentions for their stay in Stockholm.

Something every visitor should know

An outspokenly LGBT-welcoming hotel, this classy Östermalm address wants to get it right in more than just one way. Hence, Villa Dagmar proudly supports the World Childhood Foundation, which fights to protect children around the world from danger and violence, and to give them a childhood based on love, hope and opportunity.

If you’re eager to learn more about the partnership, simply enquire with the hotel’s concierge, who would be delighted to tell you all about it – and, of course, help you with everything else, too: from reserving a table at Stockholm’s hottest new restaurant to chartering a private boat for a tour around the city’s archipelago!
