Romancing Stockholm – the best ideas for a first date in the Open City

Picnic in Royal Djuargården, Stockholm, Sweden

Whether you’re lucky enough to call yourself a citizen of our beautiful capital or you’re a frequent visitor, going on a Stockholm date is always a good idea: the Venice of the North bursts with scenic little corners perfect for romantic strolls (just visit the old town and you’ll see what we mean!) and you’re never far from a charming, little bar.

Lovebirds are somewhat spoilt for choice when it comes to first date ideas here, but for some of the most special, check out our suggestions below – and don’t forget to bring a pack of mints!

Wow your crush with dinner and entertainment at Cirkus

Let’s start big, shall we? At Cirkus, one of Stockholm’s most distinguished event venues, there’s always something brewing: from intimate concerts to major musical and theatre productions. If you’re looking to impress someone, why not invite them to experience some real-life stage magic at one of Cirkus’ several event halls?

To complete the night and really go all out, you could also take your crush for dinner and a glass of champagne at the in-house Cirkus restaurant, an elegant yet friendly affair with beautifully crafted dishes, an extensive wine menu and candles on each table… Oh, bella notte!

Bond over drinks at Stockholm under the Stars

Want things to be a bit more casual, instead? Arrange to meet your other half at ‘Stockholm Under Stjärnorna’, among the latest additions to the capital’s nightly entertainment scene, this laidback and super-social venue some 50 metres above street level is cool, casual and totally fun!

You can, of course, let your dreams run wild as you look at the stars together, but if all goes well, you’re much more likely to end up busting some moves to wow your crush as the DJ spins their records and the city’s hip crowd gets flirty all around… A fuss-free and fun-oriented venue, this place can set your night on fire.

Put together a hamper and picnic on Stockholm’s greenest island

Nothing like a good old picnic to wrap someone else around your little finger: if you’re more of a daytime date kind of Romeo, consider buying a few fine foods from Sturehofs Matmarknad or the Butiken at Hotel Diplomat and meet your crush on the leafy island of Djurgården.

Thanks to its impressive size, there are countless places to put down your blanket and whip out some strawberries and a bottle of bubbly on the island. An especially picturesque spot, however, is the ‘Isbladsviken’, a pretty lake surrounded by fields and forests, that doubles as a popular bird-watching spot. For an idyllic date with meaningful conversations, Isbladsviken’s quietly romantic surroundings are hard to beat!

Listen to live music at Hellsten Glashus

If quiet isn’t your thing, make your way to this eclectic hotel on Södermalm. Behind its multi-coloured glass facade, Hellsten Glashus hosts a number of regular live music events within its Glashuset WY13 venue – much to the delight of local music aficionados.

Despite the hotel’s apparent trendiness, the scene here is surprisingly friendly and welcoming, with Hellsten being an avid supporter of the LGBT+ community. Why not surprise someone with a spontaneous night of jazz, paired with colourful cocktails and dancing? And if you slow-dance until late at night, you might as well check into one of the quirky rooms at Glashus – though you might not get much sleep…
